Wow, this is extreme.
How can you have six months of corrupted backups!? This sounds like gross negligence on whoever was responsible for the backups.
I work in IT too, responsible for server backups, and if this happened because of me, I'd definitely be fired.
We do daily, weekly and monthly backups. The monthly backups are stored in a different place, in case the dailies and weeklies get smoked, we still have the monthly ones.

Well, I'm glad you were able to at least recover from some backup.
Time to reup all my stuff I posted over the last half year. Time to get moving!

Right...
I don't even understand how it was able to happen. In order to migrate, they would've had to have a working backup, so what happened to that?

This aint NSA, this is free internet porn. Not really something you need to set up an extremely robust backup system and pay tens of thousands for offsite storage for. Periodic testing of backups to check for corruption isn't fast & easy, you would know that working in IT. And the smaller the admin team, the more likely it is that it's something that you're gonna skip doing. Production comes first.

Frankly I'm surprised they had backups. Usually sites like this just go down when they initially go down.

They go down, not because of the lack of backups, but because of legal issues and not finding a new hoster.
