- Imam al-Ghazali was a renowned Islamic scholar and theologian born in 1058 in Tus, Khorasan. He excelled in fiqh (Islamic jurisprudence), usool al-fiqh (principles of Islamic jurisprudence), and ilm al-kalam (theology), studying under Imam al-Juwayni. Al-Ghazali initially made philosophy accessible with "Maqasid al-Falasifah" (Aims of the Philosophers) but later critiqued it in "Tahafut al-Falasifa" (Incoherence of the Philosophers), identifying contradictions with Islamic beliefs.
Al-Ghazali defended Islam against esoteric movements like Ismailism, stressing the unity of the inward and outward aspects of faith. In his late 30s, a personal crisis led him to abandon his prestigious position and embark on a ten-year spiritual journey, during which he wrote "Ihya' 'Ulum al-Din" (Revival of the Religious Sciences), integrating spiritual teachings with practical Islamic law.
Imam al-Ghazali's work emphasized the importance of understanding one's heart and consciousness to know Allah. He explored the concept of the ruh (soul) and argued for the divine nature of human consciousness. His teachings on introspection, aligning the internal state with divine will, and achieving balance in the soul remain influential in Islamic thought.
