Ahhh! This episode was so sad, it almost moved me to tears. It made me want to cry, for Momiji, for Tooru 😟. But, you know? They leave me a great lesson ... always be strong and not let the bad memories owe you, to keep smiling, to embrace those memories to be much stronger in the future.
This anime and its characters have transmitted many messages throughout its history. I think I'll never forget Tooru, she's one of my favorite female characters in all my time watching anime. I love her for her strength.

Ps: 1. We already have the first person nominated for the "worst mother of the year" of the anime 2019, Momiji's mother.
2. Do not tell me that Kyo is behind the accident of Tooru's mother.
3. Confirmed, the cap that Tooru keeps, is from Yuki.
4. I like the new opening and ending.

I was barely keeping my tears from being shed this episode. I can’t fully describe how beautiful Momiji and Tohru’s conversation was amidst the sadness they felt within themselves. No matter how painful life can be we still have to go on. :-‘)

This episode made me burst out of tears for most of the episode, relating to this sad episode can really hurt people but also give meaning to it.

When Momiji was talking about his family to Tohru like that I was one milimeter close to send death wishes for him and suddenly he said that she doesn't remember him T-T

and that sad past followed up with her Mother getting into despair...

second part hurt me the most losing both parents and the only person who left is an old grandfather who doesn't have a shelter to give her.

Tohru deserves much more and more love, strong, optimistic, cheerful, and that one billion dollar smile. 10/5

For what it is otherwise a great dub, these awkward and forced German accents for Momoji and his family makes me want to neck myself. They are so bad.

That aside, and trying not to hold a grating voice as representation of a character, Momoji made me finally feel real sympathy for him. Death and loss of loved ones seems to be a recurring theme in this series, and that's something I can really relate to. When Saki was talking about if Tohru'd died, she may wish she'd never even met her so she wouldn't have to feel Tohru's absence, I felt that. That's the sort of thing people don't talk about much, I guess because it doesn't seem appropriate, but it's real, and it hurts.

I hope Tohru's -- and her friends' - connection with her departed mother doesn't suddenly get written off the story.

Eh... does Kyou feel sorry for what I think he's feeling sorry for? Man, if my theory is correct, then the episode he finally decides to open up will definitely be a pretty heavy one in terms of emotions, that's for sure.

Overall, it ended up being a quite powerful episode in terms of character development and storytelling. I absolutely loved it.

Momiji's way of thinking is so mature, by the way. His backstory is really sad and he has all the right to hate his mother for not even trying to love him yet he doesn't hold any resentment against her or her little sister. Sister who seems quite interested in him... I wonder if there will be some development for her later on as well.

I didn't like Momiji backstory. It seems too forced.

Second half was much better and sad. I feel bad for Tohru.

THIS IS WHY I STOPPED WATCHING OMG T__T Momiji's story will always hurt me no matter how many times I've read it or even watch it...so incredibly sad. And even though his father is kind and says he will love Momiji two times more, but there's just no way it will be the same, because his priority HAS to be with Momiji's mom and sister. If he's not there with them in his free time, it'd be suspicious! I'm glad at the very least, Momiji's father still loves him, but Momiji deserves everything...just like all the other zodiac children.

Although the character designs really isn't my favorite (not terrible though), I do like how well drawn Kyou's shocked-guilty expression was when Hanajima asked him why he feels regret at the graveyard. You could really feel the storm of emotions Kyou was feeling in that moment.

This episode hit me twice: Momiji's backstory and the anniversary of Tohru's mom's death.

I was not expecting such a tragic and heartbreaking backstory from a character like Momiji. It's just so... I'm not even sure what the word to describe it is. It is not Momiji's fault that he's a Zodiac, and yet his mother blames him... and calls him "that thing". She didn't even try to accept him... and yet he gave up her memories so that she can live, to save her, all because even though his mother didn't acknowledge him and WANTED to forget him, he still loves her. Damn, that hit me really hard. I initially thought his mother cheated or something, but then the bomb dropped with Momiji saying that his mom doesn't know about him... He looks so bright and cheerful but in fact he has a lot of pain inside, and he's stronger and more mature than Hatsuharu, Kyou, and Yuki, despite his age and his appearance and general personality... Damn.

And then the anniversary of Tohru's mother's death. The flashback scenes to when the accident happened made me tear up. But anything involving Tohru and her mom always makes me tear up. But imagine losing the only and closest person to your life, with his dad having died earlier. Tohru is just like so alone. And then her mother died so unexpectedly. Tohru and Momiji are alike. They are both so bright and cheerful, even though there's a scar they'll never forget inside, and they carry on through life even though inside they're sad and pained. Truly those two are very strong and I admire them, to be happy and grateful even in the face of great loss, pain, and suffering.

I wonder what Kyou and that cap have to do with this. Was Kyou involved in the accident? I have no guesses at all about the cap except that the cap was given by Yuki to Tohru, but that bit was shown (without confirmation) a few episodes back.

Also, now it's explained why Tohru was so worried about a mere cold from Yuki. Because her father died of something they thought was a cold. She's lost so much, but she's so strong...

Why the Sohma family needs to suffer so much. What does Momiji did wrong? Just bcs he's part of a zodiac fam. It's so frustrating!!!! They deserve to be happy.

Uo and Hana got overkill fashion there lol. I wonder what happened to Kyo why does he seem restless. And Hana looks acts like a mother lol

New opening and ending, I wonder why. I loved the animals in the ending, I thought they looked very cute! What an episode! Tackling difficult subjects again. I am so admirative of Momiji and Tohru. I wonder what Kyou was thinking. I am quite happy that the story is developing more. Momiji running around the corridors is not safe though!!! I am looking forward to next episode ^^

Guilt in the graveyard and then an apology there? I don't think that these two correlate in any way, so I'm guessing he kissed her and apologized for it - in that case, didn't think he had the balls to pull something like that!

A thousand/10 episode. Seriously, this show just keeps to amaze me.

Momiji's backstory and speech were really incredible and heartbreaking (I didn't cry tho)

Thank goodness it was followed by a wholesome second-half

So why was Kyo apologising to Tohru in the end?

Momiji’s backstory almost made me cry. How could anyone reject a precious child like him? To this day he smiles but his mother…that was a lot. As for the funeral aspect, Kyo is too precious. I just want to know what’s going on inside his head. I want him to be okay.

dunno why, but that ending caught me by surprise. the reason i dunno why is precisely because the ending didn't have much on it except bold hints. lol
kyo - something with tohgru's mother
yuki - something with the hat
i have some theories but i prefer to keep them to myself and see if i'm right or not.

momiji's backstory is pretty sad, have to hand here the author for being masterpiece in building character, as momiji consider and acting and looking as lost child in his dreams, dressing as a girl, acting like a kid and above all pretty annoying (though i gotta say in this adaption his annoyance is balanced and not that annoying), so when you give him such sad and brutal backstory it's really reach the peak of the watcher to think this is great matchup.
and that also gave me more about my theory about the "curse" not being focused about the transforming, but the transforming is only the half of it.

though the OP is kind, err, happy? and compare to the story it's not in place. i actually find it balancing the light heart feeling and the dark feeling of the anime.
ED is really nice, but i find the first one much better.

It was so sad hearing the little German boy's story. He is such a good person, and the fact that there was so much hatred towards him is devastating. He has incredible strength though.

It makes me so happy to see how much love Tohru has around her. She really deserves it.

Also, when Kyo whispered into Tohru's ear at the very end, it was simultaneously cute/sweet and creepy.

This is such a heavy hitting episode. I couldn't stop tearing up throughout, especially during the grave visit. It's incredible how Fruits Basket manages to draw out the intensity of both grief & joy simultaneously. Every painful moment is met with an equally strong sense of warmth & kindness.

The new OP captures that feeling so poetically. In a way, each character has an "umbrella" that serves as a barrier to protect themselves from the storms of their own trauma & scars. The umbrella itself isn't a solution to the storm though - it's but a temporary reprieve from it. It's only when the sun shines through that they can finally be free of both the rain & completely step into the light.

I knew that Fruits Basket was an anime about family problems, neglect and abuse, but until EP 13 everything had been done so subtly that I didn't expect all this emotional charge to be thrown at once in just one episode. It was definitely the best so far. The Momiji scene with his mother made me cry a lot.

Oh man, oh man, oh man. Just when I thought I had figured out Fruits Basket it hits me with this episode about Momiji’s past and it’s so heartbreaking. Yeah, the happy go lucky blond kid of the Souma family was ultimately not wanted by his own parents mainly just because he was part of the Zodiac. God damn what monsters I mean how could they do this to their child? Their own child, their newborn son and they wanted to get rid of the memories of him because of the fact he’s different? Again what monsters. But at the same time the episode highlights that Momiji doesn’t even remotely resent his own parents about disowning him which is a harsh reality for him to accept but he manages to keep moving forward in the present and keep a positive outlook on things. Which is a good thing to have there. And it actually got me near to crying there.

The second half is a lot more lighthearted with Tohru and the others going to the graveyard and paying their respects to her long departed mum. They even had a picnic in the graveyard, apparently Kyo is also feeling guilt according Hanajima’s waves and I really thought he had kissed a sleeping Tohru at the end there. But what’s he saying sorry to her for? Also Yuki has found Tohru’s hat which is pretty interesting and we might have stuff revealed about those two things along the way I feel.

Also what did I think of the new opening and ending? Well they are good...but they don’t really stand out to me and I honestly feel like I prefer the first ones for this show. Maybe they’ll grow on me but for the time being, I like ‘em but they aren’t really noteworthy to me.

I'm still trying to compose myself after Momiji's story—it hit me harder than I could have anticipated. While Tohru's visit to her mother's grave was deeply moving, there's something uniquely heart-wrenching about Momiji's tale. The thought of a parent choosing to forget their child, and Momiji having to pretend in front of his mother and sister for their sake, is a pain that's hard to fathom. 💔 If I could, I'd give Momiji the biggest hug for his bravery and selflessness, especially since he's still just a child himself.

This episode was a stark reminder of the deep-seated pain and loss each character carries, subtly hinting at Kyo's past and his reaction at Tohru's mother's grave. It's clear that each member of the Sohma family, and even Tohru herself, has a heart-breaking story to tell. The strength they show in the face of such sorrow is both inspiring and devastating.

As we peel away the layers of these complex characters, I can't help but brace myself for more emotional revelations. This series masterfully captures the beauty and tragedy of life, making each episode a journey through the vast spectrum of human emotion. 🥺🌸

Momoji and Tohru have unhealthy coping mechanisms that are romanticized, which is realistic. Some people cope with tragedies by being overly positive, and people wrongly romanticize that. It's an unhealthy trait that needs to be fixed. Momoji is overly positive about everything, to the point where he even respects sadness and tragedies, and is willing to forgive cruelty. Tohru is self-sacrificing to an unhealthy degree.

It kind of reminds me of when I was a kid. My cousin and I talked, and he said that people were too quick to throw things away. I agreed and even used myself as an example. I said, "I'm quick to throw/give away toys that I've lost interest in." My cousin goes on to say that his grandmother (my great auntie) keeps everything that people give her. I admired that trait and thought it was good. I romanticized it. Though I was a naive kid. Years later, I would realize that such a thing was problematic and basically hoarding (which is NOT healthy).
