| THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE. ---------------------------------------- Sekai-kun prank-calls Yaguchi, but it's just the matter of enlisting help from a genius like Yotasuke to close the gap. Even art students don't have breaks regardless of occasions (and Yaguchi is making things worse for himself via challenges), and you know that Ooba-sensei is quite the crafty teacher to put a riddle to the Christmas feeling: by drawing the shortcake using charcoal. There's no rest, and Yaguchi's artistic experimentation continues under Ooba-sensei's tutelage. As it seems, Yaguchi is spending New Year's together with Yotasuke visiting the traditional Hatsumode shrine, because he doesn't have any friends other than him, Hashida and his parents. The small confession ringing in the New Year from Yaguchi to Yotasuke, and it's all good. The New Year has come, and art classes resume for assignments...well, too much play and no work. Yaguchi's charcoal experimentation certainly pleases Ooba-sensei, and he has to go all spurt to the final exam. Kuwana on the other hand, other than lookin' a lot Gyaru-like, feels the pressure from her family within from her older sister. Everyone is stressing on more oil paintings while Ooba-sensei tries to help release the tension to all. The dessin drawing is the most basic of Geidai's entrance standards, and that's a given for those wanting to pass their first attempt. Kuwana and her older sister's art does resemble each other, and it's the same feeling of trampling and looking down on one another, even if it runs in the family. Challenge after challenge, Ooba-sensei goes many steps further into enriching and expanding Yaguchi's broad sense of art in others' compositions that look good, starting off with basic shapes. But Kuwana's POV being seen that as many people drop out due to mental and health problems (which mean lesser rivals), and she's too focused on being better than her older sister like a wall to cross of of comparisons. Still though, I'm impressed of how Yaguchi is able to maintain his cool while in the midst of everyone being more claustrophobic and stressing over exam art. Time till the exam: 1 week. |

| CH11 to CH13. Prank call, Sekai-san is a sneaky one. It's time for more assigments even though it's winter break soon. We all know how Ooba-sensei really is. Welp, drawing with charcoal is something else. Even Yaguchi has to experiment with all kind of stuff to get it right. He has to find his own ''weapon''. No one expected Yotasuke to be with Yaguchi, espically not on New Year. But, they're visiting the traditional shrine after he apologized for the prankcall. As you know, he's pretty much an introvert. Yotasuke doesn't have any friends. Well, beside Yaguchi and Hashida. Time for classes again. And classes always comes with assigments. Oil assigments is a must but everyone is pretty much stressing about it. The thing about Kuwana and her sister is interesting. Everyone pretty much knows her because of her sister's paintings and not her own which makes her feel pretty shitty. That's why she looks down on other people to get the same kind of feeling. There's a week left for the first exams and Ooba-sensei is training Yaguchi to death. Yaguchi has to level up in order to pass the first round otherwise it's a no-no for him. It's sad to see a lot of people drop out but that just means more chances for the rest.  |

| well well well Yaguchi tries new stuff and adds more techniques to his arsenal and Panda grill and him have a lot of similarities as well but have a different outlook and felt bad for the retaker and the other girl...and props to the OP for the detailed reply. |

| Great episode! Yaguchi’s art just keeps on getting better and better. Yotasuke and Yaguchi also seem to becoming closer friends. Looking forward to the next episode! |

| Man that convo got dark. Kuwana is a perfect example of how you never know how much someone is struggling on the inside. To the outside, looks like she’s got everything figured out. Great artist, smart, good looks, etc. but that all just shields her insecurities and inferiority complex with her sister. Could be a huge boost for Yaguchi confidence going forward. Great episode. |

| I was considering dropping this before during the earlier episodes, but now I realize that would have been a mistake. This anime is beautiful. Apparently not all are pleased with the animation but I find it absolutely solid and not lacking at all. What’s really important is yaguchi’s journey and I’ve been thoroughly intrigued while following it so far |

| Great episode. Felt paced slower (better!) than the previous ones. Kuwna is a good char. Hopefully some serious relationship/friendship between her and Yaguchi is happenng ... Too bad she isn't listed as main but the crossdresesr guy/girl is listed as other main char. (Though he/she has less screentime.) I hope we still get enough of Kuwana in the future. Best char so far - after senpai already left early + the crossdresser not too interesting. |

| Uff, many issues to reflect on in an episode, it is something that in manga maybe works but in anime, I would like to have moments in which I am not afraid to stop paying attention to the scene and to be able to think about what I just saw. Yep, experimenting with drawing materials is always exciting and challenging. Regarding the last plot of the episode, surely many will come back to memories of the admission period to the university. |

| It feels like it is just now really starting to find its stride in this adaptation. The pace has found a good rhythm and we are getting some good development for the characters. I’m not expecting the art or animation to improve anymore, but I’m hoping that it can continue to adapt the content in this way. |

| Favorite episode so far. That so well-known pressure before important exams was depicted perfectly and as for Yaguchi and Kuwana, I'm really enjoying the interactions they are having. She's turning into such an interesting character. |

| This whole episode, I kept waiting for something to happen, but it just ended without anything. None of the scenes had any weight. Since I have read the manga, I know that the events of this episode becomes very important later on. But, nothing felt important here. Everything felt like a slice-of-life episode. Yaguchi and Yotasuke's bond is very important to the plot. And, here we learn that they both like each other despite not being good at being around each other. In episode 1, Yaguchi and Mori-senpai had a discussion about how being called a genius or talented makes it look like you didn't work hard at all. Yet, Yaguchi calls this-and-that person genius and talented, anyway. While the anime does show the slight discomfort he causes to others by saying that, it doesn't do it like the manga, where you pray for him to stop and reflect on his words. Yotasuke's mum looks like a caring person, but she doesn't seem to pay attention to her son's feelings and needs. Despite being so young, Yotasuke just said he has nothing but art in his life. So, clearly, he doesn't feel any connection with anyone. And, everything about him shows how lonely he is. Ooba gave Yaguchi a very good homework. Arrange triangles and circles in different ways on a paper and make them look good. It lets you understand what looks good and what doesn't. (I wish the creators of this anime did that exercise too. I don't like the uninspiring composition in this anime.) Another important thing Ooba said: good paintings look good even when you look at them in black and white. |
| I didn't expect much when I went to watch it, but now every episode that passes I like it more and I get more and more curious. |

| I always feel like the bgm doesn't really fit at times, especially here during the new years shrine visit.. but the episode itself wasn't bad. Really nice to see an episode highlight Kuwana, and Yatora progressing even more! |
| It's nice to see Yaguchi happy every now and then in this show and not being depressed. Yaguchi and Yotasuke are at least hanging out on the New Year. But, at the same time, it is sad to see someone trying so hard for that exam only to get hospitalized in the end. That's really sad. Just one week left for the exams and Yaguchi is trying his best to get the stuff done but I hope he doesn't overwork himself just like so many others. |

| The pacing finally slowed down. Goes into a bit about Kuwana. Not much drama as I expected which is a good thing. Next episode will be the exam. |
| The part with Yotasuke during the new year was definitely interesting I would say, but most of them are becoming crazy, what's happening with Japanese people, hospitalized because you don't eat and sleep because exams are near how it is even possible, art is destroying them xD |

| "I'm not talented" if the biggest load of bull this anime has tried to sell yet, like he's clearly been portrayed as immensely effortlessly talented from the beginning, before even showing any interest or understanding of art. I'm guessing it might be trying to show that he doesn't even understand how talented he is, while thinking that other guy is talented (not even knowing how hard people have or haven't worked at it), and that's why they had that natural annoyance/hatred with each other. I mean his senpai who he looks up to, and who got him into art, tried to teach him this right at the start...that she had worked super hard at it and boiling it down to talent was unfair...then he goes to the lessons and is immediately like wow these guys are talented without knowing how hard they worked to get there lmao. I wonder if this show will continue with this "he isn't talented" or some point he will actually come to learn and understand that he quite obviously is. He still needs to work hard to improve and there's still a story that can be told here...but painting him as untalented after how this series starts just doesn't make any sense. on another note those calorie snacks lmao, clear as day production placement but I feel like I'd miss it if I wasn't living in Japan and seeing them, since I'd never seen them before coming here. |
