I'm a little unsure how to record the chapter number for One Punch Man. I've read up to date with this week's Sweet Mask issue. On Wikipedia this is referred to as chapter 102. On the website I was using to read it, it was referred to as 108. And for some reason in the discussion thread on these forums it's referred to as 144.

Which number do I use? It doesn't have a number on MAL as its ongoing.

One Punch Man could be a bit of an issue, but the math checks out. 144 seems to be the last chapter.
The issue lies with the fact that the 102 numbering is to go with the source material, which is One's manga, and this adaptation by Yuusuke Murata is longer, so chapters are usually named 100.5, 101, 101.5, and so on. So you know which chapter of the original it is, but most people go by amount of chapters.

Cool, I'll change my MAL to 144 then as it's the same thing, just the site I was using was using the .1/.2/.5 etc

Thanks

@Flash87 In the forum of OPM there's a sticky thread with the official site for the manga. There you can check the correct numbering.

Hello again!
For item #18 [Started: DATE] [Finished: DATE] (N.18) Read a manga with a non-human main character.
Would I need to provide proof for this if the entry I want to use isn't on MAL?
I wanna use this Manhwa.
The main cast are all ghosts.

Not really, the proof is the entry itself. "Try listening to these stories from the ghosts themselves."

Unfortunately, from the FAQ:
"May I use light novels for the challenge?"
Light novels will only be allowed for the item that requires them, but they can't be used for the whole challenge.
It's a good light novel, though. You could always use it for intermediate.

Aye I know. I put it off after reading Omoide because I need to be in the mood to read it. I mean, I could've continued right away, but not reading smth in the right mood can ruin the experience, and I wouldn't want that to happen with this franchise ^^

Hi! So I'm a newbie at manga reading and I'm not sure in many things.
For example how do I know if its serialized in a shoujo/shounen/josei/seinen magazine?
Does Yarashikute Ijiwaru. count as a collection of short stories? I think it is for the same author but I'm not sure if its valid.

Hi!
You can usually tell when looking at the magazine's page, what they usually publish.
You can also search for the magazine in Wikipedia if you're not sure.
It counts. :)

Just finished my Novice Level! So thought I'd give some quick opinions on what I've read, either to inspire others or start some discussions

  1. (N.01) Read a collection of short stories.
    Goggles
This was a really touching collection of short stories, the title tale being the main event for sure, Tonkatsu was also a lovely story. Worth a read.
    My rating: 8/10

  2. (N.02) Read an award-winning manga.
Planetes[The series was the winner of the 2002 Seiun Award for Best Comic in science fiction]
An excellent manga about life in space, this is really good grounded sci-fi showing the difficulties that future life could have. Another great read.
    My rating: 8/10

  3. (N.03) Read a best selling manga.
    Death Note
One of the highest rated mangas on the site but I really couldn't get into it. There was WAY WAY WAY too much exposition. Layouts became tiresome with just back and forths of people plotting, explaining their plot, what they expect the response to be and then vice versa. This was a slog to get through and it was no way near as good as I was expecting.
    My Rating: 6/10

  4. (N.08) Read a manga that has been adapted to anime.
    One Punch-Man
Awesome fun. Super shounen manga done well with an amazing extended cast. Saitama and King being so oblivious to the world around them was the real highlight, can't wait for more.
    My rating 9/10

  5. (N.09) Read a manga series you can finish in one day.
    Sayonara Sorcier
This was a super random choice and a pleasant surprise. A somewhat alternative history of Vincent Van Gogh and the Paris art scene of the time. Good stuff.
    My rating 8/10

  6. (N.10) Read a manga that is 1 to 5 volumes in length.
    Metro Survive
Really well written disaster/survival manga where none of the characters overshadowed the seriousness of the situation. Lots of nice little twists and a concise exciting read.
    My rating 9/10

  7. (N.15) Read a manga about food, music, or art.
    Kodoku no Gourmet
I was really really upset to find out that only the first volume of this has been translated. A wonderful mix of travel and food exploration by an everyman protagonist. The food looks great, his reminiscences and thoughts are insightful and it's a pretty read.
    My rating 9/10

  8. (N.17) Read a Comedy or Slice of Life manga.
    Gokushufudou
This one is pretty new and not got a huge amount of chapters released but the main character is phenomenal. An ex-Yakuza living and LOVING the househusband life.
    My rating 9/10

  9. (N.18) Read a manga with a non-human main character.
    Gon
Very pretty but it does become a little repetitive. Gon is cute and a quick read.
    My rating: 7/10

  10. (N.19) Read a manga about school.
    Omujo!
I've been trying to read all different kinds of things, hence hitting things like Gon and Sayonara Sorcier... this one was very very different. So the MC discovers a girl in his class wears diapers, other girls take this as it his being his fetish and follow suit. Cue a love triangle of diaper loving girls trying to pull a dude who isn't into diapers. Super weird but occasionally amusing.
    My rating: 5/10.

So that's Novice level done! Most of them were great, only really Death Note (which I expected to be great) and Omujo! were disappointing.

Lemme know what you thought of any of these!

Congratz!

I found Death Note quite good, but I still don't get the amount of praise. It felt dragged out and I personally didn't like any of the characters. Ofc I'm not supposed to like Light, but I couldn't get into any of them either.
Ah, but the style was really good imo.

Nr. 9 looks very good!

It's fine to use it for the challenge, but link to the mangaupdates page since it actually has the relevant information on it

@Ironclad_Cobra , I'll do so, thank you very much!

I'm slowly moving towards my Intermediate part and have few doubts:

1) Would Banana Fish count for deliquent manga? Is tagged as such on mangaupdates but I'm not 100% sure;

2) (I.23) Read a manga about space - would a manga taking place in space count? Or does it need more specific conditions, like space being the very main topic (smth hard sci-fi like);

3) I have 0 idea which titles I should use for (I.06), (I.10), (I.20, (I.27). It'd be perfect for very short titles but I'll appreciate any suggestion~

Also, may I ask for a manga suggestion needed for (I.25)? Any genre would do just please, smth really short, I've already packed myself with a lot of 10+ volumes titles... Thanks a lot! <3

I found Death Note quite good, but I still don't get the amount of praise. It felt dragged out and I personally didn't like any of the characters. Ofc I'm not supposed to like Light, but I couldn't get into any of them either.
Ah, but the style was really good imo.

I watched Death Note anime waaaaay back in my fan begginings and recently I've tried to read manga with no much luck. I think Death Note is this kind of story that you can fully enjoy only when you have 0 idea about plot, characters and the intrigue. Otherwise you quickly loose reading/watching flow and focus on plotholes and weak points which this title is really full of. And since it's nowadays a wide-known classic, it's hard to have no spoilers before reading.

For me the biggest disappointment was so far Mushishi. Everyone had been recommending it to me since I can remember, it's very highly ranted here and on other sites, it was even published in my country by a publishing house known for translating only remarkable mangas... It is, indeed, a very good title, with perfect story and character writing but... I think it was lacking of emotions. It had no main plot, characters were changing with every chapter, the main one was very distanced and had no charisma, art style wasn't helping at all since author has a habit of giving everyone the same face and facial expressions. Can't say I hated it or that I lost time for reading it but really can't undestand all the praise it gets.

1. I'd say it counts, haven't read it tho. :P
2. Being in space would count.
I'll get back to you with recs after a while. :D
