Hy Zaret wrote an English version of the lyrics, which Leonard Cohen used when he recorded "The Partisan". The article covers the history of the song from French resistance anthem to English folk and beyond, citing several authors' discussions on the differences between the original French and Zaret's English words, their meaning and context. The article also covers the style and structure of Cohen's version and that it contains both Zaret's English, sung by Cohen, and the original French, sung by Cohen and a trio of French women. This excerpt demonstrates the style of the music as described by one source, and both the English and French content as described by several sources.
