ofcourse both aspects need to be good in order to make a good anime, but what is more important?
according to me, I guess its the characters at the end of the day that we as anime watchers resonate and relate with...but I'm willing to hear your take on this.

Its very even but i have to go with characters. Altough i love Code Geass i think Lelouch is what ressonates with people and not the actual plot, if you understand what i mean

Characters, plot does not matter one bit for me tbh, If I’m gonna be around these characters for hours then they have to be well written or at least have some personality/dynamic.

I see, but I think you misunderstood my question. Suppose if in a legendary anime, there is a good plot and good characters. What do you actually like....the plot or the characters?

Around 90% of the times (I just made that up), if the characters are bad, that means the story isn't good either. On the other hand of the spectrum, even if the story is very lacklustre or kinda poorly written, the characters can make up for it if they are compelling enough (unless the story is completely dogshit). For example, a lot of things about the plot of Kore wa Zombie Desu ka? is.... questionable, but the bizzare and hilarious characters more than compensate for it.

Long story short: Good characters. Bad characters can completely bring the show down, while good characters can make the show better.

there is a higher chance of unique original plot rather than unique original characters so for lasting memories i prefer the plot one

like Evangelion started the hedgehog dilemma in anime and its memorable for me because of that plot

Definitely characters, if an anime with good plot had only characters in it that would irritate the hell out of you, what's the point in watching it? If the characters are good you can at least enjoy them.

I'm kind of a sucker for plot driven stories, but I don't think one is more important than the other. Having the balance between the two is great, it's just that I tend to focus primarily on the plot.
I sometimes forget to finish my sentences.

Depends on wether you prefer passive or active characters.

If you like active characters, then the character drives the plot;
If you like passive characters, then the plot drives the character.

I think my favorite is when an anime/tv show/film manages to have two main characters: one of them passive and the other one active. I think it is a nice contrast and provides a good deal of balance.

Personally I like when the characters are developed more than the plot but both are still needed to make a show good. Either one can make or break a show, like the characters in a show could be great but the actual plot could be terrible and vise versa.

characters 100% of the time. a great plot can't make up for shit characters (AoT), but great characters can make up for a shit plot (code geass(?)).

I'm right, you're wrong.

its funny that a lot of fans here on MAL thinks AoT has a bad plot after reading the finale chapter

so people do care about plot here on MAL

Good characters. I can watch a whole season of nothing but asses being wiped as long as I think the characters are good. If I find the characters bad it will always dampen the experience too heavily.

I like both equally to be honest. What's best is when they come together as one to completely destroy the stereotype that all anime are trashy fanservice cartoons made for horny teenagers. Makes it easier to spread the word lol.

Good characters for me.

Humor and Good characters almost single handedly make Slice of Life as popular as it is.
While not-so-good characters can put a dent on even the most ambitious plots. For example, Paprika (imho)

I think characters.

I feel like its much easier to watch an anime with a badly written plot but has good characters than an anime that has a good plot but bad characters that are boring or that you dislike.

Good characters all day. Show with good characters can be very enjoyable even lack of the plot. But show with good plot and bad characters can be very boring because lack of investment in the characters because of how bad or unlikeable they are written.

Characters are a huge factor in directing a show's direction, and without good characters the show doesn't have much direction. A plot is still important, but I'd prioritize a good character rather than plot, since you don't need to have the best plot to still be a good series.

In extreme scenarios, both plot and characters need to be balanced for a decent story. If you have great characters with awful plot then the story won't go anywhere and characters eventually become bland. GoT is a good example of this.

However if you have a great plot, which is needed to further story and character development, the odds of it having good characters is greater. But is not always the case, still I think the importance of plot to characters is 55-45

I would say characters. Maybe an story is not the best or not the best execution of it, but at least personally if the characters are good I can find the Manga/Anime really enjoyable

This definitely depends on what the show tries to portray. A character driven drama, like March Comes in Like A Lion would be very bad if it didnt have compelling characters. The same applies for the Ghost in the Shell movie but with its' compelling story/philosophy.

Characters are what carry a show, how the plot will be is up to the creator. But even if the plot is only decent enough, great written characters will still keep the viewers engaged.

An example of show where the plot is emphasized more than the characters is AOT. But as soon as the plot failed, interests were lost. While characters would still have some hold on the viewers.

If the plot is good enough, characters would be definitely batter. I would prefer a show where it's depends on every characters characteristics rather than one man show.

Plot moves the characters forward, but the characters also move the plot forward. Having a nice plot/premise but unenjoyable characters ruin the anime, but so does a shitty plot with amazing characters, when said characters could be in better premises
most fluffy SoL romance have abysmal plots but mediocre to decent characters, so there's that

Personally for me it would be characters because I just cant get fully invested in a show if the cast is extremely bland, an example of this would be AOT, although I have enjoyed AOT s3 and upwards, I just cant get fully invested in the show because 90% of the cast is bland af and they lack any personal goals that would make me like "that" specific character, its got really high peaks ya, but I find it really hard to feel tension or care about a character like Levi during a hype fight like the final fight in s3 when hes got barely anything to him apart from being badass, these are my thoughts please dont kill me:(.

characters. Its why I love DBZ so much, its clearly more character-driven. Even if there's little plot, long as I absolutely love the characters I will absolutely love the show. Without the same cast DBZ wouldn't even have been the same

@YeeYeeAss
facts. SAO's plot was interesting but I don't think I remember liking a single character tbh.

It will always be a 50/50, both need to be good in order for an anime/manga to be classified as good. But I guess for me, characters are a little bit more important. They can still make the show enjoyable, if it is lacking in plot.

I don't care if the story is generic tbh, as long as the characters make up for it. It's more about the atmosphere, the setting and especially the characters and their dynamics for me.

For example, I really wanted to like Demon Slayer or Hero Academia or I wanted to like Vinland Saga, but I don't like most of the characters at all. I also don't like most characters in Attack on Titan anymore.

It's impossible for me to like and enjoy the series then, because in real life, human bonds and interactions are also very important for me and I'm more interested in the characters and their relationships.

Second comes the setting and world building, third is the atmosphere and fourth is the actual plot.
I also like some iyashikei series a lot that don't even need a complex, epic plot. They are great on their own merits.
